BONE FRACTURE - CAN LASER THERAPY HELP?

A fracture or a broken bone is a medical condition in which a bone is partially or fully broken or cracked. The most common causes of fractures are traumatic incidents; overuse; or conditions that weaken bones and make them breakable such as osteoporosis and some types of cancers.

Treatment options depend on the severity of the fractures and may include the use of splints, braces, plaster cast, traction or surgery. Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has been broadly used as an additional treatment to speed up the healing process, reduce pain and tissue inflammation with no side effects.

WHAT IS LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY ?

LLLT, also known as Cold Laser Therapy is a non-invasive therapy which involves the application of low lever laser beam to the targeted area. In this process, the light is absorbed by damaged cells and converted to usable energy which enhances regeneration of tissue, improvement of circulation, and relief of pain and inflammation.

LLLT acts via a non-thermal effect, it emits no heat, sound or vibration. Therefore, LLLT does not hurt and is safe to use for people at all ages.

CAN LLLT HELP FRACTURE HEALING?

Studies have shown that LLLT plays an important role in enhancing bone tissue formation leading to fracture healing. LLLT can be used as an adjunct therapy to treat both non union (failing to heal) and small bone (in the hand and foot) fractures. When a fracture occurs the soft tissue around the fractures may also be damaged and injured and a fracture averagely takes about 6-8 weeks for healing. LLLT rapidly reduces pain and swelling and assists with a quick recovery with a reduction in scar formation.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Once you have a confirmed fracture, it is best to consult your doctor or your podiatrist to assess the best treatment for you. LLLT may require a minimum of 4 to 6 weekly sessions depending on the severity of the fracture. LLLT is recommended to be used in conjunction with other treatment to achieve the optimal outcome.
