Children's feet- do we treat them if there are no pain?

Updated: Jan 19, 2022

Children grow and change everyday. It is exciting to watch them when they first start walking and when they become confident on their feet. Sometimes the growth can be quick and result in children experiencing concerning symptoms which parents might want some reassurance on.

Common children's feet problems that podiatrists see:

- Flat feet

- In-toeing

- Out-toeing

- Tip toe walking

- Bowed legs

- Knock-knee

- Leg length difference

- Regular tripping or falling

- Clumsiness or poor balance

- Growing pains

- Sever's disease

- Osgood Schlatter's condition

- Low muscle tone

- Ingrown toe nails

- Warts

When should I be concerned?

If your kid complain about foot pain or if you observe an awkward walking or running, it is time to seek professional help. Severe pain can indicate that something is wrong. Prompt diagnosis and treatment can help kids get back to their activities quicker and prevent other problems.

My kid complain of no pain, do we treat them?

Yes and No!

Not all of the above issues come with pain, that's why sometimes vague symptoms can be neglected. One of the most common children's feet problems is flat feet which is a normal part of the development process in children. Many children with flat feet have no symptoms and they can outgrow when they reach school years. However, if it runs in the family, it is worth getting it checked out. In some cases having flat feet can possibly cause biomechanical issues in adulthood. A thorough assessment is required to see if treatment is needed.
