Do you suffer from aching, stiffness or swelling pain?!

Do your pains stop you from carrying on with your day?!

Are you tired of not finding the right solution?!

Therapeutic ultrasound can help you get back on your feet!

This popular treatment modality can provide you with the relief you've been searching for!

What is Ultrasound therapy?

Ultrasound therapy (US) is suggested as one of the most commonly practised treatment options available for soft tissue musculoskeletal conditions of the lower limb since as early as the 1950s.

In our Podiatry rooms, we use a non-invasive US machine which directs high-frequency sound waves undetectable by human ears, to the targeted site to generate heat and facilitate tissue healing.

This process is pain-free and works through heat stimulation of the cells inside of the ligaments, tendons and muscles targeted to limit inflammation and increase blood flow.

It is an easy process which may vary in time depending on your presenting problem however, will usually be within 10 minutes.

How does it work?

During treatment, a round-headed probe is used as the transducer.  Ultrasound gel is also used on the surface of the skin in order to decrease friction and act as a conductor of the ultrasonic waves.  These ultrasonic waves are generated by a piezoelectric effect caused by the vibration of crystals within the head of the probe. The waves that pass through the skin cause vibration of the local soft tissues. This vibration can cause a deep heating locally though usually no sensation of heat will be felt by the patient.

Common conditions responsive to ultrasound therapy:

  • Plantar fasciitis/heel pain

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Ankle sprains

  • Stress fractures

  • Ulcers/wounds

  • Neuromas

  • Bursitis

  • Arthritis/joint pain

  • Sever’s disease

Positive outcomes of ultrasound therapy:

  • Increased local blood flow to the target site

  • Reduced inflammation

  • Deep heating of the tissues

  • Increased healing

  • Breakdown of scar tissue

Therapeutic ultrasound is unlikely to cause any unfavourable effects with professional guidance. We use US in our clinic to treat soft tissue conditions related to the lower limb. Usually we aim for weekly sessions, ranging from 4-6 sessions to treat different conditions for long lasting results.

With many conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, we may use ultrasound in combination with shockwave therapy & laser therapy. Once the pain reduces, we may start a course of rehab therapy using the interferential modality. We have comprehensive treatment plans for common lower limb conditions.
